What is SEO?

SEO – Search Engine Optimization from wikipedia

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the online visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine’s unpaid results—often referred to as “natural”, “organic”, or “earned” results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a website appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users; these visitors can then be converted into customers.

What affects SEO and how do you get it? First we need to define what is a search engine and why should you care?  A search engine is what you use when you are online and go to search. There are many different search engines.  Some of the more popular ones are Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask, and even YouTube.  Because all search engines use a proprietary algorithm to rank a website, it can sometimes seem daunting.

If we look to Google for guidance, here is what they recommend.

  • Give visitors the information they’re looking for
  • Make sure that other sites link to yours
  • Make your site easily accessible

They also tell us some things not to do. Do Not:

  • fill a page with lists of keywords
  • attempt to “cloak” pages
  • put up “crawler only” pages

Google provides a service to its clients (the users of the search engine, not the providers of content) and as such, it scans the content on your site and determines if it would be of benefit to the searcher. To be of benefit, it must contain solid content, be reputable (other sites linking to it) and be constantly updated with new content.  Links to other sites as resources or references also help to give your site credibility.

Consequentially, SEO is to complicated a subject to tackle in one article.  As a result, we will need a series of articles to explore in depth just what it is.  And therefore how you can structure your site to best optimize it for SEO.
