Importance of Goal Setting
Before we can discuss the importance of goal setting, we must first determine what a goal is, the types of goals, short term goals, long term goals, stretch goals and how do we go about the process.
A goal is simply something we want to achieve. It could be personal such as losing 10 pounds. Or it could be financial like having a $1,000.00 in savings. It could be something that you want to do next month or it could be 10 years.
The difference between a dream and a goal is that a goal is written down with an action plan on how to achieve it.
A dream is just a dream. A goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline.
— Harvey MacKay
Short Term Goals
A short term goal is something that you want to do in the very near future, no more than a year from the date you set it.
Long Term Goals
A long term goal is something that will take you longer than a year to accomplish. Typically hese are your 3 and 5 year goals.
Stretch goals are something designed to make you grow. These are goals that are beyond your current reach. To achieve these you will need to push yourself out of your comfort zone.
Lifetime Goals are beyond the 10 year mark. These are how do you see your life or your business in 10 years, 15 years or longer.
Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.
– Tony Robbins
For a business, you need to start with your 10 year goal, then determine what you need to accomplish in 5 years in order to accomplish the 10. Now what do you need to accomplish in 3 years to make sure that you accomplish the 5 year goal? Now keep going until you have this defined down to a monthly goal. Once you have it down to a monthly, you can go down to the day level if you need to. Some goals you will and some you won’t.
